Standing next to me in this photo is Claudia, a patient with an advanced case of keratoconus who recently visited our office from Rome, Italy. Claudia has struggled with poor vision since she was 10 years old. When she was a teenager, Claudia was diagnosed with keratoconus which is a degenerative corneal condition. As her vision continued to diminish, the doctors in her country (Honduras) told her parents that her only hope for clear vision would be to undergo corneal transplant surgery. 10 years ago, Claudia visited our office for the first time and was fit with special contact lenses which provided her with clear vision. As her vision continued to change, we fit her with GVR Scleral lenses 3 years ago. Last week we examined Claudia once again. Her vision has continued to remain stable and she is seeing clearly (20/20) and comfortably with her scleral lenses. Claudia will never need to undergo corneal transplant surgery.
In the 2nd photo below is a profile view of her right cornea. Notice how pronounced and steep the central portion of her cornea is. Helping patients with corneal disease is what we do and helping these patients regain quality vision is what gives meaning to the work that we do.
