Corneal Ectasia

Standing next to me is Walter, a patient who recently visited our office from Lima Peru. Walter became legally blind after undergoing 4 separate LASIK surgeries in his right eye and 2 separate LASIK surgeries in his left eye. All of these surgeries led to a condition called “post-LASIK corneal ectasia“. This condition is characterized by a distorted protrusion of the cornea. Conventional eyeglasses and contact lenses are not able to allow Walter to function as he once did before undergoing these surgeries. 4 years ago we fit Walter with GVR Scleral lenses which provided him with clear comfortable vision. Last week, Walter returned to our office for a re-evaluation of his condition. Both of Walter’s corneas have been stable over the years. We did make a minor change to his scleral lenses which are improving his vision. Walter will never need to undergo corneal transplant surgery. Helping patients like Walter see clearly once again after years of suffering with poor vision is what makes it a joy to do what I do.
