Treatment of distorted corneas due to keratoconus

The patient standing to my right is Ignacio, who recently visited our office from Santiago, Chile. Ignacio is extremely nearsighted with distorted corneas due to keratoconus. Several years ago, Ignacio's left eye suffered a retinal detachment requiring a surgical procedure known as a "scleral buckle".

A complication of this surgery is an elevated conjunctiva/sclera ( the white portion of the eye seen on the left in this photo). To allow Ignacio to see clearly we fit both of his eyes with a GVR Scleral lens. To address the issue of the uneven ocular tissue, we had to have the edge of the lens "notched" to go around this area of the eye. Look carefully and you can see this part of the lens which was cut and polished by a very skilled scleral lens craftsman. Ignacio's vision and comfort with his scleral lenses is excellent. In this photo on the left is our student extern Julie Kim and on the right our other student extern Samy Bensbaa.
